We view each child as a thinking, creative individual whose positive self-esteem is important to his/her social, emotional, spiritual, physical and cognitive development. We believe that children should spend a significant amount of time exploring the outdoor environment because connections with the natural world play an important role in healthy development and well-being. Daily activities include a balanced program of indoor/outdoor, quiet/active, teacher-directed/child-directed and pre-planned/self-guided learning experiences. The theme-based curriculum includes a range of language development activities, engaging literature, guided explorations through beginning science and mathematical principles, music/movement, dramatic play and a variety of art media/materials.
Because we are dedicated to the development of the whole child, building a partnership with parents and being sensitive to the varied backgrounds and orientations of our families is important to us. The staff and parent Steering Committee promotes a feeling of community for the children and for their parents. Parents and family members are always invited to help in the classroom, for Jewish holiday celebrations and participation in family programs. We provide a nurturing creative environment rich in Judaic tradition. Jewish holidays and Jewish values are woven into the daily life of our school. Each week is highlighted by challah-making and a clergy visit for the Friday Shabbat celebration.
Active membership in the Boston/Haifa ECE Partnership has further enriched our program, providing avenues for bringing Israel to our children through visits and curriculum exchanges with our Israeli partners. Our program was awarded the distinctive “Magen Hagan” Jewish Accreditation. We are currently working toward having our playground become a certified Outdoor Nature Explore play space.
“We feel so fortunate to have had our three daughters be part of the Temple Shalom Nursery program! I feel like it keeps getting better and better. Learning and incorporating new ideas from staff research and reflection keeps the school alive, creative and an exciting place to learn.”
“The Nursery School has given us a strong foundation on which to build a Jewish home, and in connecting us to the Temple, it has given us an ongoing community to build even more.”
