In the 19th and early 20th centuries in Western and Central Europe, as ghetto walls gradually came down, Jews were first allowed entrance into European life, culture and learning. For many it produced a disorienting culture-clash that led eventually to some attempting to discard their Jewish identity and assimilate totally. It led to others taking moderate or, at times, radical steps in reforming Jewish religious practice; ultimately creating what we now call Reform and Conservative Judaism. By the turn of the century, despite some lingering social anti-Semitism, Europeans of Jewish heritage were making substantial contributions to business, medicine, law, science, politics, literature and the arts. Among them: Mendelssohn, Marx, Freud, Herzl, Rothschild, Einstein, Mahler, etc. The class will meet 7:30 – 9 pm on Tuesdays November 3, 10, 17, and December 1, 8, 15.
