Fall Course: Fateful Encounter: Relations Between Jews And Muslims in the Medieval and the Modern Islamic World
Instructor: Jacob Meskin, Ph.D
This course is intended to provide both a general overview, and some detailed vignettes, of Jewish life under Islamic rule during the Middle Ages and Modern times. Analyzing the complex relationship between Jews and Muslims in medieval Islamic societies, in particular, constitutes a fascinating intellectual and spiritual adventure in itself. However, studying the medieval period also turns out to be crucial for gaining a full understanding of relationships between Jews and Muslims in our times today.
Winter/Spring Course: Maimonides: Speaking to Us Across the Ages
Instructor: Rabbi Reuven Z. Cohn, J.D.
Course Description: Who is Moses Maimonides? Does this scholar born some 880 years ago in Muslim Spain matter to us today? The title of a recent book by a leading scholar calls Maimonides ‘one of civilization’s greatest minds.’ Another leading scholar asks us to ponder how the Jewish world today would be different if Maimonides had never lived. Closer to home, many of us may well have a copy of A Maimonides Reader sitting quietly on a bookshelf. In this course, our goal is to become so thoroughly acquainted with Maimonides’ thinking that we will break the binding on this outstanding anthology. As we search together for meaning and insight, we will find Maimonides to be starkly modern at times, and highly traditional at other times. At the end of the course, we will be better acquainted with this renowned, creative, profound and complex individual.
