Co-sponsored by the Brookline Clergy Association
In this course, we will explore interactions among Muslims, Christians, and Jews in medieval Europe’s most religiously diverse region. Some of the themes we will explore include religion and communal identities, the complexities of cultural engagement in pluralistic environments, and religious toleration and its limits.
Deeana Copeland Klepper is associate professor of religion and history at Boston University, where she teaches classes on Christianity, Judaism and Islam, especially in medieval context. Her research focuses on Christian and Jewish approaches to biblical interpretation and medieval Christian-Jewish encounter more generally. She is the author of “The Insight of Unbelievers: Nicholas of Lyra and Christian Reading of Jewish Texts in the Later Middle Ages” and a range of articles and essays. Klepper is currently working on a project that examines the intersections between Christian theological approaches to Jews and Judaism and the practical engagement between Christians and Jews in medieval European society. She holds a PhD in medieval European history from Northwestern University.
