The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life
This remarkable film profiles the late Alice Herz-Sommer, a renowned concert pianist, distinguished music scholar, and until passing on February 23 at the age of 110, the world’s oldest known Holocaust survivor. Using interviews with Alice, archival footage, and family photographs, director Malcolm Clarke captured the power of music and the extraordinary capacity of the human spirit through Alice’s experiences at the outbreak of World War II and her time at Theresienstadt concentration camp. The film easily could have been depressing, but Sommer’s courage, endurance and optimistic account of her long, extraordinary life instead is at times thrilling, incredible, cheery and miraculous.
A movie that starts as a terrorism thriller and then morphs into a mystery gradually becoming an electrifying domestic drama — one you may find very hard to shake.
