Join us for Friday evening Shabbat services followed by a talk given by Jonathan Decter, the Edmond J. Safra Professor of Sephardic Studies at Brandeis University. The Hebrew poetry of medieval Spain is famed for its verses in praise of nature, wine drinking and love. Yet just as common is the poetry written in praise of powerful men – community leaders, scholars and patrons – so-called “praise poetry.” Professor Decter’s talk will explore aspects of Jewish political culture in medieval Spain in light of Hebrew praise poetry, with special reference to similar contemporary Arabic writing. Followed by an Oneg Shabbat. Don’t miss this evening sure to stimulate the minds and the taste buds.
