In this holiday prep class, we will learn about the background and evolution of the purimspiel, the Purim story presented as a satirical, humorous play. We will read together several sections from famous Yiddish author Itzik Manger’s Purim play, The Megile, and discuss hidden meanings in this beautiful piece of Yiddish literature. No Yiddish background necessary — we will be reading the English translation.
Taught by Ruby Poltorak. Ruby has taught and translated Yiddish, and has studied and taught “The Megillah of Itzik Manger.” She sings in the 90-member Workmen’s Circle Yiddish Chorus, and was a Yiddish vocalist in a Klezmer band for ten years.
