This is a six week series, with Ruth Herman*
Our lives are made up of intricate patterns of stories. These stories start with…and often circle around again to… the people who guided us in the earliest years of life. These guides were our “family,” no matter the configuration…no matter the length of time they were with us…no matter the eventual outcome of the relationship. And we are who we are today, in part, due to our bond, or missing bond, with some of them.
In this Writing Workshop, we will honor the lives and histories of those who came before us, and document all the ways that our ancestors helped to shape the course of the lives they inspired.
O Ruth Herman will offer warm-ups and assignments to help organize each participant’s collection of Family Stories. These are only suggestions; participants are free to use their own format.
O Participants are encouraged to use a variety of forms in this class, including letter writing, artwork, poetry, and monologues.
O No previous experience is needed to participate except having some memories and stories that connect you to your origins.
* Ruth Herman has devoted 30 years to teaching children and adults the joys of writing and sharing stories. She has taught in many schools, including as Adjunct Faculty member at Lesley University, and Director of the New England Storytelling Center. She is the Founder and Director of the Circle of Writers in Acton, MA.
